The Grant County Fair in John Day is the oldest County Fair in Oregon, we were told. We like these fairs that look like they have some pioneer character.
Here is the one of the older animal barn areas.
Can't you just smell the bales of hay and animals.
Here we have Brittany Lawrence with her Champion Black Angus steer named Granite.
Miss Sara Cole is on the left. Orrin Ledgerwood in the middle and Tucker Murphy on the right. Rumor has it Orrin and Tucker will become famous after this picture goes on the internet. Sara wasn't sure. We'll check back. We're proud of these 4H kids.
We met up with these very interesting teachers. Kyle Kimble on the left is the Ag Teacher in John Day. Lynn Reagan with the coffee cup is the Superintendant of the Monument School. Erika Watson is the Ag Teacher in Monument. On the right is Mike Wilson the Ag Teacher in Long Creek. These 4 teach skills to the youngsters in Grant County today so they can lead by example tomorrow. |

Here's Mr.Cowboy Rob Estabrook. We first met Rob in Gold Beach and then
again in Fossil. In this picture Rob is involved in teaching new calves
where the arena exit was for their debut later in the day. Rob was the NWProRodeo Pickupman of the year in 1998 and is the NWProRodeo Director of the year in 2000. |

Here go the first set of calves learning the way out of the arena.
This is a fun food area. The local parade was about to start so almost everyone had headed to curbside on the main street.
The 4H had a booth selling food at the Grant County Fair. During our visit Abbie Komning and her mom Sue were dishing out the food. At this moment they were probably discussing the future of Orrin and Tucker.
Now here's something we haven't seen at the fairs. During the summer, Red Cross volunteers are busy bringing hot meals, snacks and other supplies to emergency workers and people who have had to flee wildfires in the West. Bobbie Bourne on the right is a director of the Central Oregon Red Cross. Voy Ann Banner is one of many volunteers. Contact your local Red Cross to see how you can do your part to help those in need. |
