Picture of Fair entrance Here we are at the Sherman County Fair in Moro. Moro is on Hwy 97, 18 miles from the Columbia River. Up on a plateau surrounded by golden wheat fields.
Picture of inside of animal barn The animal barns were roomy, clean, bright and airy.
Picture of the Von Borstel family. Here we have some of the von Borstel family. Kristen is on the left. Linda (mom) is in the back. Callie is on the right. They are all involved with 4H.
Picture of Daniel hall. 4H member Daniel Hall has 240 pound Bonnie as his market animal.
Picture of Travis Shafer. 4H member Travis Shafer with 260 pound Archie and two other members of Archie's family.
Picture of Matt Kaseberg. 4H member Matt Kaseberg with Scotty on the left and Tiger on the right.
Picture of Ken with Senator Vern Cook. This is our third time to run into Oregon Senator Vern Cook stumping for votes on our County Fair tour. That's the Senator on the right.
Picture of Rodeo Arena. The Sherman County Fairgrounds has a full sized Rodeo Arena. They were having a rodeo for small kids. We are amazed at all the volunteer activity at the County Fairs. In this rodeo arena, there were dozens of adults around teaching youngsters riding and roping and courtesy and poise and confidence. This is more good stuff the County Fairs provide.
Picture of childrens playground The Sherman County Fair has a nice sized playground area for kids.
Picture of award ceremony. The Saturday we were at the fair they were having an awards ceremony. In this picture, Ted and Betty Sabey were handing out their scholarship award. Awards ceremonies at the County Fairs are important. The 4H and FFA kids compete to have the best Livestock breed, be the best at showing their animal, or be the best at livestock judging. All of this 4H and FFA activity teaches kids courtesy, good grooming, poise and confidence and how to fit, train and handle animals. It is the best.
Picture of auction. The 4H auction is the culmination of the 4H members market project. They have to care for their animal and get it ready for market. Then they go to potential buyers in the area to get commitments to bid on their animal. It is very common for a member of 4H while learning personal discipline, responsibility, respect and social skills to make enough money at the 4H market auction to pay for college.
Picture of community barbecue. There was a large barbecue after the 4H awards where parents, 4H and FFA members and buyers of livestock come together for community sharing.
Picture of Moro view. So, we end our summer long tour of Oregon's County fairs. If there is a summary I could make about our summer long journey to Oregon's County fairs, it would be that the County Fairs provide an excellent place to come together to develop today's youth into being tomorrow's leaders. This learning happens year round but the focus and the goal is pointed toward the County Fair Date. I think this is a valuable asset that needs to be cultivated and supported by each of us.
